Principal's Welcome

Dear Kerkstra Families,

Welcome to the 25–26 school year!

It's hard to believe we were just wrapping up the 24-25 school year and now we are gearing up for an excellent 25-26 school year. We hope you had a summer break filled with great memories.

Our amazing team of teachers and staff have been hard at work preparing for the return of the amazing students at Kerkstra!!!

As we start the new school year, our focus remains on the continuous improvement of students' skills in math, reading, social studies, and science. We'll also provide enriching Music, Art, PE, STEAM, and social-emotional development opportunities to ensure a well-rounded education.

As with any skill, focused and purposeful repetition leads to a higher level of success. The ability to read is no different. In grades one and two, the focus is on learning to read fluently. As we move into third grade, students are making the important transition from learning to read to reading to learn. This shift focuses on building comprehension skills to deepen their understanding of what they read.

We encourage reading at home for at least twenty minutes each night to support this development. Books from the school library or local libraries in Oak Forest and Midlothian can provide excellent reading materials.

Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for student success. Establishing consistent bedtime and morning routines can help make daily life more manageable and support a positive start to each school day.

Please take a moment to review our first newsletter of the year! It’s filled with helpful information to support you and your child in starting the school year off on the right foot.

On a personal note, my family and I are also preparing for the upcoming school year. Our oldest son, Jacob, entered the United States Army in late June and is currently a new cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Over the next four years, he’ll be completing his college education while also training to become a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.

Our youngest son, Matthew, is continuing his high school studies at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, where he’s an active member of the Horsemanship Program. He’s growing as both a student and a leader, and we’re excited to see all that his junior year brings. And of course, our faithful dog, Zoe, is keeping close watch over the Nendza house!

As always, we're here to support you and your child throughout the year. Feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher, the school office, or me with any questions, concerns, or feedback.

Here’s to a fantastic start to the school year!

Kerkstra proud!
